Kindergarten
- Sort your pairs of shoes (tennis shoes, sandals, boots). For an extension sort your while families and then color a graph with how many of each shoe.
- Measure the lengths of different rooms of your house, by using your feet and walking heel to toe from one end of the room to the other.
- Pay attention to the weather this week, create a graph and graph how many sunny, cloudy, and rainy days occur throughout the week (you can even keep recording for the whole month!)
- Look outside your window and find as many shapes as you can, then play “I Spy” to describe the shapes you see.
- Roll 3 dice to create 3 digit number (or 1 dice 3 times—no dice write the numbers 1-6 each on a piece of paper, throw in a bag and pull out) then tell what number is 10 more/10 less and 100 more/100 less than the 3 digit number you rolled.
- Practice counting money, pull a handful of coins and practice counting the amount in each handful (for extra fun sort all your coins into piles of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies count each set of coins to see which has the greatest value).
- Say a number and give 4 equivalent names for the number using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. (example equivalent names for 9 are: 3+3+3, 100-91, 3x3, 81/9)
- Create a detailed schedule for yourself for the day. Write down the length of time you will need to do each thing and write the time you will be beginning and ending each activity. Draw the time to show what it would look like on an analog and digit clock. (ex. Brush teeth 5 minutes 8:00-8:05, have breakfast 20 minutes 8:05-8:25)
- Find a food item and divide it into more than 2 equal pieces, compare the pieces you have… For example what is bigger 1/3 of the pie or 2/3 of the pie? Which is larger 2/4 of the graham cracker or ½ of the graham cracker?
- Hide an object in a room of your house and give directions for finding it. Person finding the object can only move according to your directions in steps and rotations using fractions. For example, “Make a quarter turn clockwise and walk 3 ½ steps. Now make a half turn clockwise and walk 4 ½ steps.
- Find a recipe for a healthy snack and make a fraction of the recipe for your family.
- Create a math obstacle course on your sidewalk out front for your neighborhood then solve your problems (or write little math tasks on pieces of paper and put in line around your house) (Examples to get you started…. Spin in a circle 24÷6 times, jump on the greater number 1.999 or 3.01, hop on one foot 7x3 times).
