MAKE 10 GAMES
They are many different games that help practice the "Making 10" strategy!
Making 10 is when you figure out different combinations of numbers that can be added together to equal 10.
For example 4 + 6 = 10.
Here are some games to help practice this. You will need a deck of cards to play these games. No cards? Create your own! You will need to write the numbers 0-10 on a different card, you will need to write each number on 4 different cards-- so 4 cards with the number 0, 4 cards with the number 1, 4 cards with the number 2, etc)
Make 10 Pyramid: 1-4 players. You will need deck of cards. Click here for video for directions on how to play. MAKE 10 GO FISH: Best played with 2-4 players. Set all Jack and King cards aside. The "Ace" cards will equal 1 and the "Queen" cards will equal 0. Each player is dealt 5 cards and all other cards are facedown in discard pile.. You will look in your hand and see if any of your 5 cards make a combination of 10, any combination of 10 in your hand set down. (Ex. if you have a 3 and a 7 in your hand, 3+7=10 so you would set them down). First person looks at their hand and asks another player for a card that equals 10 with a card in their hand. (ex. if I have a 2 I would ask a specific player for an 8 since 2+8=10, or if I had a 10 I would ask a specific player for a 0 since 10+0=10). If person asked does not have the card, they will tell the person to "Go Fish." Player will grab from discard pile. If they get a combination of 10 they will lay it down. Game continues until first player is out of cards, they are the winner!
Make 10 Memory: 1-4 players. Set all Jack and King cards aside. (Ace=1, Q=O). Lay all cards out and turn over so you cannot see the numbers. Turn over 2 cards at a time and try to find a pair that adds up to equal 10. If your cards equal 10 you keep them. If they don't you turn back over. PLay conitnues until all cards are used.
Activity 1: Play Bunny Hop with a family member! To play Bunny Hop you will need: a number line, a dice, and two game pieces (one fore each player). Both players will start at 0. Then roll the dice, and move game piece that many spaces. Once you reach the end of your number line you will move backwards back to 0. The catch? You have to end up on the number at the end of your line exactly, for example if your number line goes to 20 and your game piece is on 17, you will have to roll a 3 to land on 20, if you roll a 5, since that number would be greater than 20 you will not move your game piece and miss your turn! Same thing at the end if you are on 4 and moving back to 0, if you roll a 5 that doesn't land on 0 perfectly so you will need to skip your turn and roll again! Click here for video!
No Dice? Write each of the numbers 1-6 on a small piece of paper and add to a bag. On each turn a player will pull a number from the bag, move that many spaces, and add number pulled back to bag. No game pieces? Use two different colored legos, two different colored fruit loops.
